about

I thought about a caveman writing a blog. Og, and his blog. A silly rhyme. What would he write about?

A lot of lyrical silliness ensued.

A month or so later, this story emerged.

lyrics

OSANA AND OG

Og was a Neanderthal man fell asleep in a cave in Japan
The earth leaked a mysterious gas a hundred thousand years flew past
Osana went out picking daffodils on the slopes of Hokkaido’s hills
She fell in a hole her ankle broke and in the darkness Og awoke

All these miracles make me wonder how can there not be a god
Guiding them through Osana and Og

The cave was deep the cave was wide they found food and water inside
Medicinal herbs so her leg could grow strong wood for a fire to keep them warm
Acquaintance proceeded by trial and error laughter when she tried braiding his hair
And the night before their rescuers came Og at last learned to speak her name

All these miracles make me wonder how can there not be a god
Guiding them through Osana and Og

A passing ranger heard their cries
Within the day the press had arrived
And soon Og was a celebrity
The emperor had them over for tea
But as they were walking back to their car
Osana felt a hand on her arm
And a man in a suit said no cause for alarm
We just have a few questions we mean him no harm

So they whisked Og off to a secret base
a converted luxury hotel space
Where they tested blood scraped DNA
Got some puzzling results back the very next day
Some puzzling results they asked Og to explain
They asked him and asked him again and again
And Osana she kept trying to call
But as spring turned to summer and summer to fall
Og could see he was there for the long haul
So he kept secret the most important Neanderthal secret of all

A year passed then his chance came
the guards were watching a baseball game
So he snuck out of the room quietly stepped out onto the balcony
He looked out on a distant glow
The far off lights of Hokkaido
And with the blood pounding in his veins
and his heart shouting out her name
He stepped up on the balcony rail calmed himself so his nerves wouldn’t fail
And he thought of those scientists those clever men
And the truth that he had hidden from them
The secret he’d kept As he leapt
into the night sky
Neanderthal man can fly

All these miracles make me wonder
How can there not be a god
Guiding them through
The fortunate few
Like Osana and
